In this comprehensive guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about artificial turf cleaning, including common issues, step-by-step cleaning processes, and tips for long-term maintenance.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Artificial Turf

Cleaning artificial turf doesn't have to be complicated. Follow these steps to keep your turf in top condition:

  1. Remove Loose Debris

Start by removing leaves, twigs, and other debris from the turf. Use a leaf blower or a broom with stiff bristles to sweep away loose dirt. For smaller areas, hand-picking debris may be sufficient.

  • Use a leaf blower or a soft-bristled broom to clear leaves, dirt, and other loose debris.

  • Brush lightly to avoid damaging the turf fibers.

TurfShine does have a service that is just for debris removal, called TurfShine Essential. so if you don’t have time give TurfShine a call.

2. Rinse the Turf

Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to rinse the entire surface. This helps remove dust, pollen, and light dirt. Pay attention to areas with visible stains or spills.

Don’t add to much water to the turf because you will create a pool of water at the bottom of the turf and this will create a chain of events that you don’t want to deal with. Add enough water to wet the turf, about 3 seconds each SQFT is recommended.

3. Apply a Turf Cleaner

For tougher stains or odors, apply a turf-specific cleaner or a mixture of mild detergent and water. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the affected areas gently but thoroughly. Be sure to follow the cleaner’s instructions for the best results. Use the the ratio that is on the gallon or product that you buy. Located in the back of the bottal.

There is plenty of options in the market nowadays but we will tell you the one to use if asked.

4. Check and Adjust the Infill

Over time, the infill material (such as sand or rubber) may shift, affecting the turf’s performance. Use a rake to redistribute the infill evenly. If necessary, add more infill to maintain the recommended levels.

Infill application is recommended for turf that is older then 2 years but keep in mind if you don’t use the artificial turf as much then the years of replacing infill will go up. TurfShine’s deep clean and infill service called TurfShine Premium has infill application service as well.

5. Groom the Turf Fibers

Brush the turf fibers with a stiff-bristled brush to lift matted areas and restore their upright position. Brushing also helps improve the turf’s appearance and ensures even wear.

This is one of the most important steps so don’t forget to do this!
